Davoud Khosravi – Artist

"My sculptures are personal, and I try to reference the outside world through the filter of my imagination, thoughts, and emotions. I consider myself fortunate to work with material that is beautiful, alive, and presents endless challenges and possibilities."

Davoud Khosravi

“My life as an artist began in childhood, learning the intricacies of Persian rug weaving from my mother; the complex geometry and tight symmetry that are much evident in my current work. However, wood has always been my predominant interest. I recall collecting popsicle sticks to make different decorative objects as well as experimenting with other mediums.

I am a self-taught artist and developed my methods and techniques over 25 years of rigorous experimentation. I draw from a wide palette of North American woods such as maple, cherry, walnut, and mahogany mixed with intensely coloured bloodwood, purpleheart, wenge, or zebrawood.

In my work, I incorporate several techniques: inlying, laminating, turning, carving, and sanding. The many small pieces in each form are cut and aligned according to grain, colour, and pattern; shaped and polished on a large lathe, and then varnished to a high gleam.

My newest adventure in my fine craft is free-form sculpture, organic and abstract in shape. Nature, movement, and human form inspire most of my work. Some billow like fabric in the wind, some curve upwards like animal horns, and others fan out like wings or interpret body language.”
