ABOUT Debra Lynn Carroll
Debra Lynn Carroll graduated with honours in drawing and painting from
the Ontario College of Art and Design in the spring of 2000. She has maintained
an independent art practice from her studio at the Women’s Art Association
in Toronto. She has had four solo shows of new works and many group shows.
Debra’s artistic focus is to create contemporary
landscapes. The energy of nature comes to life through her use of rich
vibrant colour to create images of enduring beauty and elegant splendor.
The viewer feels as if they could walk into the painting. This is accomplished
through the large format composition, textural surfaces and three dimensional
effect she creates that brings the foreground closer to the viewer.
Her paintings invite the viewer to share these special spaces. The
only references to humans in her work are preserved as memories, such
as a pathway into the painting. She paints places of sanctuary, places
that whisper the poetry and beauty of our corner of the earth. Debra
creates a reality on canvas, an Elysian place to exist. These images
are not without a kind of jaunting beauty and a sense of the mysterious.
There is constant change in nature and defining one incredible, monumental
moment of time and place is the artist’s choice. She chooses
the subject, circumstances, and defines the painting’s boundaries… she
creates “a perfect place”. What lies beyond the boundaries
of the canvas, the edge of the seen and known? Why is the viewer alone
in the place?
