Biography: James Cobban
"A successful painting is one that conveys something of my own feelings, of the emotional tones that I experienced while involved in the creation of the painting. It's as though a kind of visual language was in play, a wordless language of feeling-tones expressed through the elements of painting, such as colour, lightness and darkness, warmth and coolness, shape and contrast and so on. When I set out to make a painting I am first and foremost attempting to capture in paint the feelings that inspired the image in the first place. I often paint landscapes, yet within or behind the visible landscape on the canvas lies an emotional landscape that is its source. My paintings are translations of inner experience, statements of feelings and intents, transient and ever shifting. They are caught in a moment of time and fixed in pigment and oil on canvas or board, to be studied later at a moment of leisure by you, dear viewer."
James Cobban has studied both Fine Art and Graphic Art, has traveled widely to observe at first-hand the almost unbelievable variety of landscapes that the world has to offer (and yet has seen only a tantalizingly small fraction of what is to be seen), and lives and paints in Toronto. He has exhibited his work internationally, and is featured in many private collections in Canada, the US, and Mexico.
