Biography: Darina Marko
Darina Marko was born in Mizia, Bulgaria in 1966. At an early age she focused her studies on fine art, beginning with after school programs. After specializing in fine art in secondary school she went on to study at the Academy of Fine Art in Bulgaria for an additional five years focusing her studies on silk printing and batik. Initially, Darina was interested in decorative arts but then became interested in studying more about the history of art. After completion, Darina moved to London, England for four years where she studied English and took textile and printing courses. Over time she experimented with different art media creating still life and landscape paintings and wall murals.
Darina spent considerable time traveling across Europe and North and South America and has exhibited her work in England, Germany, Italy and Finland In 1994, Darina and her husband moved to Toronto, Canada where they set up a graphic design and mural studio. Unaware of the art market in Canada, Darina continued to paint art work for herself until Progressive Fine Art began representing her.
Inspired by artists including Egon Schiele and Matisse, Darina bends, twists and distorts her subject matter and perspective. She freely employs mixed media including acrylic, watercolour, oil and pastel. By concentrating on the interactions between visual elements including form, colour, texture and light, her still life work acquires its abstracted aesthetic. Primarily, she paints still life works but she has created some highly textured figurative studies as well.
