Biography: Dagong Young
Born in Beijing, China in 1960, Dagong Young received his Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts in 1982. His artworks appear in both public collections around the world, in museums, galleries, universities, corporations, national embassies and official government buildings, and a large number of private collections in over 15 different countries.
In 1993, Young was selected to join the artist-in-residence program at the University of Denver's School of Arts in the United States. After immigrating to Canada in 1994, he resided in Oakville, Ontario with his family. He attended Sheridan College to study Computer Animation in order to get a taste of the technological advancements that proliferated so rapidly. After graduation, Young started working for C.O.R.E. Digital Pictures, the leading Canadian visual effects and animations studio co-found by actor William Shatner. Young is currently a senior matte painter and digital compositor in the Company. His credits can be found in over 30 Hollywood feature films and television movies.
For Dagong Young, Canada is a nation of tremendous beauty: "Its magnificent landscapes strike a chord in my heart. I am especially enthralled by the hues of autumn, the fiery barns, the winding country roads snaking the up and down the hills are bordered by trees ablaze with the colours of the fall and so much more. I have been passionate about painting these scenes on canvas for a long time."
In 2004, Young began to capture the splendour of the Canadian autumn on canvas. Among the mediums he has used during his career in the fine arts, he prefers oils: "I love their rich texture and expressivity, which augments the amount of power that each individual brushstroke contains. I combine photographs with the drawings in my sketchbook to form the initial composition for every one of my paintings. I first paint on a much smaller paperboard in order to maximize the visual appeal and arrange the colours before I move onto the canvas. I begin several paintings simultaneously and paint different parts of each to give the oil enough time to dry, so that I can paint whenever I have the time or inspiration to paint. I use the tablet during most part of the day to work on digital matte paintings for motion pictures and the traditional brush during the evenings and weekends to paint on canvases. The technological-traditional duality of my artistic career allows me to experience the forever dynamic high-tech world while indulging in my passion for oil painting."
